Since 2018, Aristotle Metadata has been quietly powering one of the most ambitious data infrastructure projects in Australia: a whole-of-government approach to metadata maturity. Now, with a newly awarded three-year contract, the NSW Government is reaffirming its commitment to Metadata.NSW, an inventory and metadata management platform designed to help agencies document, discover, and securely share critical data across the public sector.
Now, after a competitive tender process, Aristotle Metadata has been awarded a new three-year contract to continue hosting the NSW Government’s central metadata platform: Metadata.NSW.
As a cornerstone of the state’s data strategy, this whole-of-government solution is a significant step forward for data maturity across the public sector. It plays a critical role in supporting cross-agency data sharing, improving data discoverability, and increasing trust in the way the government uses data.
Aristotle Metadata CEO Samuel Spencer said, “Data is more than just numbers. It’s about people and outcomes, and a person-centric approach to data governance. Looking at how we can communicate across government and academia to improve citizen outcomes is critical to success.”
The Challenge: Turning Silos Into Systems
In 2021, the NSW Government launched a bold new Data Strategy focused on four pillars: using data to improve outcomes for citizens, treating data as a valuable asset, fostering data leadership, and strengthening public trust.
To get there, agencies needed a clearer picture of what data existed, where it was stored, how it was described, and how safely it could be shared.
To make that vision real, departments needed more than intent. They needed the infrastructure and support to bring siloed data together and improve discoverability across agencies. That’s where Metadata.NSW came in.
Built and managed by Aristotle Metadata, Metadata.NSW began as a proof-of-concept for sharing information between key agencies, especially around sensitive and high-impact datasets. One of the earliest successes was the Human Services Dataset, which brings together 27 years of inter-agency data about children and families in NSW.
Today, Metadata.NSW is available to all NSW Government agencies, with growing uptake across departments and academic partners.
“This latest phase of the program will see us continuing on a 10-year journey with the NSW Government,” said Samuel Spencer. “We’re excited to welcome more agencies as part of a broad strategy to improve data sharing and data security capability across NSW.”
Why Metadata Matters
For many departments, the challenge isn’t just having data. It’s knowing what exists, where it lives, who owns it, and whether it’s safe to share.
Metadata.NSW solves that by acting as a central registry for agency data assets. The platform makes it easier for teams to:
- Document datasets with standardised, easy-to-understand metadata
- Make data assets discoverable across government
- Support secure, transparent data sharing
- Build trust in reporting and policy decisions
And because it’s designed with simplicity in mind, Metadata.NSW supports fast onboarding, without requiring complex training or IT overhaul.
Real-World Impact: Closing the Gap
When metadata is done well, its impact extends beyond the technical. According to reporting in National Indigenous Times, data from the Productivity Commission shows NSW is now leading the way in Closing the Gap outcomes for vulnerable Indigenous citizens.
That improvement is no accident. By making high-value data assets more accessible, more discoverable, and more trusted, Metadata.NSW has become a crucial part of evidence-based policy and service delivery across the state.
“We’re proud to be part of this movement towards ethical, person-focused data use,” said Spencer. “Our job is to make sure good data doesn’t sit unused in a spreadsheet. It’s about putting that data to work, safely, collaboratively, and with purpose.”
What’s Next?
With the new contract period beginning soon, Aristotle Metadata is focused on increasing platform adoption and onboarding new agencies. While early success stories have laid the foundation, many departments still don’t realise the platform is live and ready for use.
That’s why awareness is the next big frontier.
If you’re working within a NSW Government agency, especially in policy, strategy, analytics, or digital transformation, Metadata.NSW is designed to support your work. Whether you’re managing a complex dataset, building an inter-agency project, or simply looking for better ways to document and share information, the platform is ready to help.
